ManyChat vs Chatfuel: Per-Contact Pricing or a Flat AI Plan
Finn ·
ManyChat and Chatfuel both automate Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp conversations, but they bill for different things. ManyChat charges by Active Contacts, the distinct people who interact in a billing month: 25 free, then paid tiers up to 7,500. Chatfuel charges a flat $20 a month with unlimited contacts and caps AI usage instead. Your comment volume and your channels decide which costs less.
The short answer, by situation
Prices below were read on 23 September 2026, in US dollars, from each company's own pages.
- You run keyword comment campaigns on Instagram, and that is most of the job. Choose Chatfuel. Its Instagram comment auto-reply page describes comment auto-reply and auto-DM as free "with no limits on contacts or messages". On ManyChat, every commenter your automation answers becomes an Active Contact, so a busy post pushes you onto a paid tier.
- You need SMS, email or Telegram next to Instagram. Choose ManyChat. Its Pro plan lets you connect three channels from Instagram, TikTok, Messenger, WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS and Email. Chatfuel's pricing page and home page name WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and TikTok; I found no SMS, email or Telegram channel there.
- You want AI to answer customer questions on WhatsApp. Lean toward Chatfuel, whose flat plan is built around an AI assistant on WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook. ManyChat documents its AI Replies as "currently available only for the Instagram channel".
- You already pay ManyChat on an account created before 2 March 2026. Check your billing page first. ManyChat says it is moving older accounts to the new model country by country, so your current price may differ from the one below.
What each tool actually bills for
ManyChat bills for people. An Active Contact is "a contact who has interacted with you through Manychat during your current billing month", counted once however many times they write (Active Contacts). The five plans introduced on 2 March 2026:
- Free: $0, 25 Active Contacts, 2 channels, 4 live automations, and a "Powered by Manychat" message on first contact.
- Essential: $17 a month, or $14 a month billed yearly, 250 contacts, then $0.10 per extra contact. WhatsApp, SMS and Email are not available.
- Pro: $39 a month, or $29 a month billed yearly, 2,500 contacts, then $0.05 per extra contact. AI automation, WhatsApp and integrations start here.
- Business: $99 a month, or $69 a month billed yearly, 7,500 contacts, then $0.025 per extra contact, unlimited channels.
- Advanced: 25,000 contacts, $139 a month billed yearly, custom overage.
Overage is added to the next bill automatically, with alerts at 70, 90 and 100 percent. One detail changes the count: the same person on Instagram and TikTok "may be counted separately" unless ManyChat can match them by phone number or email.
Chatfuel bills for AI work. The pricing page lists one Business plan at $20 billed monthly, or $216 billed yearly ($18 a month), with "US$20 AI credits / mo". Agency tiers start at $90 a month billed yearly for three client companies. The Business card also shows a struck-through $69 under a "limited offer" running until 30 September, so check the price on the day you subscribe. According to its usage limits page, contacts and messages are unlimited, and "keyword replies, button flows, broadcasts, and any non-AI automation are unlimited regardless of volume". AI replies draw on a fair-use allowance. When it runs out, "your bot pauses" until you renew early, the period resets, or you connect your own OpenAI key.
On ManyChat, every commenter your automation answers becomes an Active Contact, so a busy post pushes you onto a paid tier.
A worked example: one Reel, one keyword
The numbers here are fictional and only show the arithmetic. A solo coach posts a Reel that says "comment PLAN and I'll DM you my weekly planning template". In one billing month, 1,800 different people comment the keyword and 150 other people send a question by DM. That is 1,950 Active Contacts on ManyChat.
- ManyChat Essential, monthly: $17 plus 1,700 extra contacts at $0.10 is $187. Pro, monthly: $39, since 1,950 fits inside 2,500. The right ManyChat plan is Pro, at $39.
- Chatfuel: the keyword DM runs on the free comment tool at $0. If you also want AI to answer the 150 questions, Business costs $20 and those replies draw on the AI allowance.
To check this against your own account, count the distinct people who commented on your automated posts plus those who sent a DM last month. ManyChat shows the Active Contacts figure under Insights. Compare it with the plan limits above before you pick a tier.
Now the unfavorable month. The Reel spreads and you reach 9,000 Active Contacts. ManyChat Pro becomes $39 plus 6,500 extra contacts at $0.05, or $364. Business costs $99 plus 1,500 at $0.025, or $136.50, so you would upgrade. Chatfuel's keyword flow stays free by its own terms. The risk shifts to its AI allowance: if an assistant also has to answer hundreds of follow-up questions, the bot can pause mid-campaign.
The Instagram rule both tools obey
Neither tool can go past Meta's limits. Instagram's private replies documentation allows only one message to a commenter, sent within 7 days of the comment. Follow-ups are allowed only if the person responds, and must go out within 24 hours of that response. ManyChat's comment trigger adds that it fires only on a user's first matching comment under a post.
Design the first DM around that rule. Put a button or quick reply in the first message, not only a link. In ManyChat's comment trigger guide, an "Open website" button does not open the 24-hour window. If the person only taps the link, you cannot send the next message. The same gatekeeping explains why Best AI for Marketing: One Assistant, Then One Publisher checks platform permissions before any tool.
WhatsApp costs sit outside both subscriptions
Meta charges per delivered template message, priced by category and the recipient's country (WhatsApp pricing). ManyChat takes these from a prepaid Wallet. Its WhatsApp pricing guide, updated 23 September 2026, adds that from 1 October 2026 non-template service messages will be charged after 1,000 free per number per month. That change comes from ManyChat's guide, so treat Meta's pricing page as the reference for rates and confirm on your first invoice. Chatfuel advertises a "flat subscription, no setup fee" and I did not find how it passes on Meta's template charges. Ask its support before your first WhatsApp broadcast.
Where the other choice wins
Stay with ManyChat if Instagram is only one of four channels, or if you rely on its API and native integrations on Pro. Its plans are documented in detail, and the per-contact price drops as you grow. Chatfuel's allowance is expressed in AI credits, not in replies, so you only learn what it covers by running your own assistant.
Choose Chatfuel if your automation is mostly keyword DMs on Instagram, or an AI assistant on one WhatsApp number, and your contact count swings from month to month.
Before you build flows in either tool, write the condition that stops each one, the same rule that runs through Marketing Automation for Ecommerce: 8 Mistakes Solo Stores Make. And if your real load is writing thoughtful replies to comments rather than sending keyword DMs, that is a different job: ReadyToPost drafts those replies for you to approve.

The best AI for marketing is two purchases made in order, not one product picked off a list: a general assistant that researches, drafts and reasons with you, then a publishing app that holds the access tokens for your channels. No assistant posts to LinkedIn or Instagram by itself. Both platforms put publishing behind permissions only a reviewed application can hold.
A marketing automation specialist builds and runs campaign workflows inside a platform you already chose: email sequences, segmentation, lead scoring, the CRM sync and the reporting on top. It is an execution role, not a strategy role, and the published job listings say so plainly. What you get back depends almost entirely on the brief you write before the first call.

A pivot is often just the polite word we use with investors when the first company is dead and we have decided to build another one. And that is fine. Not because failure is noble, but because luck needs exposure: every market you enter, every product you ship and every channel you test is one more surface where something unexpected can land.

Base44 and Lovable both turn a prompt into a working app on day one, so day one is not where the choice gets made. It gets made by who owns the backend: Base44 keeps your database and auth inside its own platform, while Lovable writes a React codebase you own and connects it to a Supabase project you control.
Replit and Lovable both ship a managed database, authentication, file storage, backend code and scheduled jobs. The question of which one is a "real" backend no longer separates them. What separates them is how long one piece of work is allowed to run, and who operates that work once it outgrows the platform.
